| July 20 | HOWARD'S END (1992, 136 minutes) Ruth Wilcox's deathbed wish forever changes relations between the well-heeled Wilcoxes and bourgeois Schlegel sisters, Margaret (Oscar-winner Emma thompson) and Helen (Helena Bonham Carter) when Ruth bequeaths her manor -- Howard's End -- to Margaret. Ruth's husband, Henry (Anthony Hopkins), acting in his family's "best interst," burns the coda to her will. But as lonely Henry falls for Margaret, providence dictates that he pay for his duplicity. |
| August 17 | THE PAINTED VEIL (2006, 125 minutes) Shunned by a husband (Edward Norton) who's more interested in his research, the simpleminded Kitty Fane (Naomi Watts) embarks on a quest for life fulfillment. Along the way, she ignites a passionate affair with a dashing womanizer (Liev Schreiber) and travels with her husband to the Far East, where she turns her attention to fighting the cholera epidemic. Diana Rigg co-stars in this period drama based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham. |
| September 21 | THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (1988, 172 minutes) Milan Kundera's acclaimed novel about a womanizing Czech doctor in the 1960s gets fine treatment from director Philip Kaufman. Although Tomas (Daniel Day-Lewis) is adept at juggling girlfriends Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin, he has a tougher time following the dictates (or lack thereof) of his political conscience. But when Soviet tanks rumble through Prague in 1968, all their lives are changed forever. |

BEING THERE (1979, 130 minutes) In director Hal Ashby's Oscar-winning satire, illiterate gardener Chance (Peter Sellers) is run over by wealthy Eve (Shirley McLaine) and suddenly becomes educated gent Chauncey Gardiner, thanks to Eve's misunderstanding of his mumbled introduction. Taken in by Eve's family, Chance simply regurgitates what he's heard on TV - from gardening instructions to economic predictions - and Washington's political elite hail him as their next star. |

GROUNDHOG DAY (1993, 101 minutes) |

MANHATTAN 1979, 96 minutes) In the thick of a midlife crisis, television writer Isaac Davis (Woody Allen) finds himself torn between the sweet but far too young Tracy (Mariel Hemingway, who received an Oscar nod for the role) and his best friend's mistress, Mary (Diane Keaton). Shot in black and white and in wide-screen format -- both firsts for director Allen -- this film is as much a paean to the city he calls home as it is a tale of Davis's romantic foibles. |
Monday, |
THE HEARTBREAK KID (1972, 106 minutes) While honeymooning with his new wife in Florida, Lenny Cantrow (Charles Grodin) begins to rue his nuptials. So when his irksome spouse gets stuck in their hotel room with a nasty sunburn and the footloose Lenny meets gorgeous blond coed Kelly (Cybill Shepherd), it's all the incentive he needs to ditch his brand-new bride. But Lenny isn't home free with Kelly -- his hot pursuit of her quickly hits a brick wall of resistance: her loathing father. |
