Due to circumstances beyond the control of the Gold Coast Public Library, the Locust Valley Library and the Oyster Bay/East Norwich Public Library, the vote to establish a library funding district for the portion of the Locust Valley School District that is
currently unserved by a local public library has to be postponed. This area, which formerly was the Brookville School District #3, is comprised of parts of Matinecock, Muttontown, Upper Brookville, Old Brookville and Brookville.
This postponement takes places even though the libraries garnered more than enough petition signatures to place the initiative on the ballot. This decision was made by the Town of Oyster Bay because of timing constraints. Despite the best efforts of all involved, there would not have been enough time for the Town to procure and distribute absentee ballots. There were also questions that remained unanswered regarding the ballot language and subsequent budget process that could not be resolved in time for an October 25th vote. All three libraries, working in concert with the Nassau Library System, are committed to pursuing the state legislative action needed to reschedule the vote within the next 18 to 24 months.
